Smart Room 2.0

the lightness of space

Smart Room, the slide-out system designed and patented by Lippert Components (LCI) has now reached its second generation. Version 2.0 of Smart Room was developed and produced in Italy specifically for European vehicles to increase the interior space available while maintaining the more compact dimensions of European RVs, including campervans. When the vehicle is designed from the beginning to include the slide-out, the motorhome, caravan or campervan can maintain its compact dimensions while providing over 2m² of extra living space extra space in the same body length, but with less weight per square metre.

Winner of the 2020 European Innovation Award in the Vehicle Equipment category, a prize awarded by a jury of independent journalists from 18 European magazines specialized in the RV sector, Smart Room 2.0 is available in two variants.
The “premium” version is equipped with four motors that act on their respective corners, while the entry-level version, thanks to a system of shafts and gears, features two motors, one for each side of the Smart Room.

Both versions feature a new concept ECU designed and manufactured entirely by Lippert Components.

SMART ROOM

Design and Practicality

The new Smart Room design features a double protection system for total water tightness, as well as a specific gasket that acts as an additional barrier for leaves, sand or dust.

To improve the slide- out design, the opening and closing mechanism is completely hidden.

When closed, the perfect alignment of the Smart Room within the motorhome or caravan wall has a completely flush look without the presence of protrusions or recesses for more favourable aesthetics and aerodynamics.
Version 2.0 of Smart Room has been developed and produced in Italy, designed specifically for European vehicles.

When the layout of the vehicle is designed with slide out in mind, the motorhome can be more compact while offering over two square metres of extra space, but with a lower weight per square metre.

Questions and Answers

WHAT IS THE CUSTOMER’S APPRECIATION OF SLIDE OUTS IN EUROPE?

Our continuous market researchers show that there’s a high demand for space saving solutions that allow to create more compact floorplans with increased internal features. The concept of travelling compact and camping comfortably, as well as creating floorplans that today do not exist, is very attractive for the end users, that are looking for innovative concepts.

WHAT IS THE CONCEPT OF THE “LCI “SMART ROOM” SYSTEM?

The controller is connected to the motors through 4 dedicated cables and monitor the position and status of each motor. The motors drive 4 rack-and-pinion mechanisms positioned within the corners of the slide room. We also have a lower cost 2 motors option.

WHAT ARE THE MAX DIMENSIONS OF THE ROOM (W X H)?

4 meters by 2m

WHAT IS THE MAX DEPTH OF THE ROOM?

1 meter (including the thickness of the system)

HOW MUCH WEIGHT DOES IT ADD?

In some applications it does not add any weight. In fact, when properly designed, the slide-out concept reduces the overall length of a comparable caravan/motorhome with similar area. The actual mechanism plus the weight of the sidewalls, roof, & floors is about 40-60 Kg, depending on size.

HOW IS IT SEALED?

Through a double single piece seal positioned on the perimetral frame:

  • a compressed V Seal running around the whole perimeter of the room
  • a C seal compressed against the sidewall
IS THE SMART ROOM WATERPROOF?

Yes as the single “V” seal is compressed about 5 mm around the whole perimeter of the room and wipes away all of the water.

DOES IT CREATE A THERMAL BRIDGE/DOES IT DISPERSE HEAT/COLD?

Tests performed in a climatic chamber show that the thermal dispersion of a slide out is not significant.

DO I NEED THE AWNING? WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T INSTALL ONE?

The slide-out mechanism is not harmed by the lack of a slide-out awning and is entirely waterproof without it. However, if the designer elects to have a flanged room, the awning helps prevent debris from building up on the top of the slide out room that could damage the rubber seal. If the room is not flanged, the awning is useless.

HOW MUCH TIME DOES IT TAKE TO COMPLETELY OPEN/CLOSE THE ROOM?

Approx. 35-40 seconds, but depending on the depth of the room.

IN CASE OF NEED, IS IT DIFFICULT TO REPLACE A MOTOR?

No, it is an operation that can also be carried out directly by the user: only need to unscrew 4 screws and remove the motor from its corner, place the new one and screw it back in.

DO I NEED TO CONTACT A SERVICE CENTER TO REPLACE A WIPER SEAL?

Yes, but with dedicated tools and the correct procedure, it’s possible to replace the entire seal in about 30 minutes without having to remove the room from the sidewall.

HOW DO I OPEN/CLOSE IT IF THERE’S A POWER FAILURE?

The motors can be removed so that each corner screw can be manually rotated

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE 4 MOTORS GO OUT OF SYNC?

There is a procedure to reset them

HOW STRONG ARE THE ENGINES TO RUN THE SLIDE-OUT? ARE STRONGER MODELS REQUIRED FOR THE LARGER SIZES?

The system is designed to support and move a room that is well balanced, weighs 750kg or less, with a depth no more than 1m, a length no more than 4 m and a height no more than 2 m. The room itself must be built to remain ridged.

CUSTOMER WANTS BEST POSSIBLE WATER AND DUST PROTECTION; CAN YOU RECOMMEND WHERE TO PLACE ADDITIONAL RUBBERS OR SEAL?

The Smart Room combined “V” and “C” seals are designed to be extremely effective in most applications. For more extreme cases LCI engineering will offer alternatives specific to the customers design.

DO YOU HAVE A “STANDARD” PACKAGE?

Yes, we supply as a standard the outer ring profile, the 4 driving angles, (the screw drives), the 4 motors with their respective cables, the control unit and the 12V/24V converter, the “V” shape seal

IS THERE JUST ONE RADIUS FOR ALL ROOMS’ CORNERS?

Yes

IS THERE A LIMIT TO THE WEIGHT OF THE ROOM?

350kg dynamic. More can be reached, with engineering approval from LCI. 750kg static.

HOW TO REPLACE A MOTOR?

Only need to unscrew 4 screws and remove the motor from its corner, place the new one and screw it back in.

HOW TO REPLACE A WIPER SEAL?

With dedicated tools and the correct procedure, it’s possible to replace the entire seal in about 30 minutes without having to remove the room from the sidewall.

IS THERE A CERTAIN WALL THICKNESS NEEDED TO FIT OUR COMPONENTS?

Over 23mm

DOES LCI PROVIDE THE OUTER FRAME THAT TRIMS OUT THE CUT-OUT OR DO I HAVE TO SOURCE IT?

LCI will provide it

WHAT IS AVAILABLE IN TERMS OF SPARE PARTS?

Everything: motor, corner, seal, controller, cables, frame
